Coaching career

It was in Rubin Kazan where Berdyev made his name as a coach getting them promoted to Russian Premier League in 2002, and grabbing there the bronze medals in their debut year (2003). He managed the team in two appearances in UEFA Cup (2004, 2006) and once in Intertoto Cup (2007). In 2008 he led his team to its first championship title followed by second championship title in 2009.

Record

He was along with Jose Mourinho, the only coach to have won against Barcelona in 2009–10 UEFA Champions League. He went down in history by becoming the first and only Turkman to win against a Spanish club and also by being the first Turkman to win against Barcelona.

Personal life

. Kurban Berdyev always carries his pray beads with him. He never appears with out them. " I don’t consider it a token or a tradition. It’s just something I need. I just feel that I have to keep them in my hands when I’m watching a game. I don’t feel well without them. There were a couple of times when I accidentally forgot to take them to matches, even though it wasn’t my fault. And I was feeling uncomfortable through the game, as if I was missing something. Thus this is just a need I feel. I think Muslims will understand me."http://rt.com/sport/interview-with-kurban-berdyev/

Education – Turkmen State University (1971–1975), Moscow Higher Coaching School (1989–1991).

Berdyev is known as a very introverted person.[1]
